Even with Low Danger, there are a few things to keep on your radar Wednesday.  Wind slabs will be hard to trigger, but continue to check the bond between the recent snow and the old snow interface before jumping onto steep lee slopes.  And don't let a small wet loose avalanche ruin your day anywhere you find or see wet snow near a terrain trap.

    Wind slabs are trending towards unlikely, but you should still keep them in mind as you travel around, especially when approaching lee slopes closer to the Cascade crest where more snow fell over the weekend.  

    Recently formed wind slabs may be subtle as well as shallow, so use a pole or probe to feel for stiffer and deeper drifts. Use small test slopes to test the bond of the recent storm snow to the underlying old snow or crust before stepping out into bigger terrain.   Older wind slabs may linger below ridgelines at upper elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Tuesday was a few degrees warmer than Monday and featured steep temperature inversions.  The upper station at Washington Pass (6700') started the day above freezing temperature but it took until late morning for Harts Pass and other weather stations further east to warm above the freezing mark.   Professionals traveling in the Hairpin Valley didn't see any signs of instabilities in the upper snowpack or recent avalanches in the surrounding terrain.

Tuesday night and Wednesday will be mostly cloudy and mild above the inversion.  Wet loose avalanches are unlikely, but avoid traveling above or below anywhere where even a small wet loose avalanche could pose a hazard. 

On December 7-8th a storm started as rain before transitioning to snow.  On Sunday, observers found a foot of new snow at 6,600ft that was well-bonded to the old, moist surface and a generally strong snowpack below this interface.  Take care as you travel - many early-season obstacles, such as trees, rocks, logs, and creeks, are exposed or sometimes barely hidden underneath wind drifted surfaces.
