You can trigger avalanches in the recent storm snow at middle and upper elevations. These will mostly be small, wet loose avalanches, though you may encounter dry recent snow above 6,000ft. Expect temperatures and sun to warm the recent snow, up to 6", that accumulated this weekend.

    You can trigger wet avalanches on slopes steeper than 35 degrees, especially above 5,000ft. It may be easiest to trigger slides on E-S-NW slopes as the surfaces warm from sunshine. Watch for signs of instability, like fresh avalanches and rollerballs, that indicate you could trigger an avalanche. Anticipate the chances of triggering avalanches and move to lower-angle slopes to avoid them.

    If you travel to the highest upper-elevation terrain, you may find that the recent snow is completely dry. Be ready to assess for other new snow instabilities, like storm or wind slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

Precipitation should wind down before dawn on Sunday, giving way to clearing and mostly sunny skies. Check how much recent snow has accumulated at various elevations. Below 5,000ft, the precipitation may have been mostly rain, while above 6,000ft, you'll likely find deeper, drier accumulations of 6" or more. 

On Saturday, Stevens Pass patrol reported small, wet loose avalanches on steep slopes. On Friday, an NWAC forecaster on Skyline Ridge reported a supportable crust in open areas at most elevations. The crust was softer and more variable at the lowest elevations and in the trees. As this new crust grows stronger, we have less concern about older, weak layers deep in the snowpack. At this point, we think an avalanche failing on or just above the Early February Crust would be very unlikely. If you were to encounter this problem, it would probably take a large trigger and/or occur in higher-elevation terrain in the eastern portion of the zone. 

We’re at the tail end of a prolonged warm period. Numerous wet avalanches occurred throughout the zone. You’ll probably find piles of debris and frozen rollerballs on and just below many steep slopes, regardless of aspect and elevation.
