Temperatures well above freezing and decreasing winds will cause significant warming and melting at the snow surface today. We are likely to see an increase in wet loose avalanche activity today. Plan to be off of steep slopes and out of the way of overhead hazard by the time the snow gets too wet.

    Minimal winds and warm day time temperatures suggest wet loose avalanche activity is a strong possibility today. Wet snow, roller balls, and deep boot penetration are all signs that wet loose avalanches are becoming more likely. Snow slipping out from under your skis is another good indicator that instability is increasing. Be mindful of terrain features that promote warming, such as solar slopes and cliff bands. Temperature and solar radiation affect different aspects, slope angles, and terrain features differently. You may experience stable conditions beneath your feet while terrain above or below you is already too warm. Even a small wet loose avalanche in extreme terrain can have big consequences. The best way to navigate wet loose instabilities is to be off of steep slopes, and away from overhead hazard, earlier in the day before the snow gets too wet.

Much of our region has had a gradual build into warm day-time temperatures, with substantial refreezes overnight. Winds and sporadic cloud cover have limited the size and number of wet loose avalanches, and may have given the snowpack time to adjust. A handful of D1 natural wet loose avalanches occurred yesterday beneath large rock features, with aspects ranging from NE - W. 

The high elevation Bishop area received up to 15 - 30 cm of snow just a few days ago. We have seen some D1 wet loose activity in the area up to 11,000'. Areas above 11,000' have yet to experience prolonged temperatures above freezing, and may begin to transition today. If this is the case, expect natural wet loose activity. 

Today will be the day in which our regions sees the least amount of wind, and the warmest temperatures of this spring like period. While clear skies likely promoted a good refreeze, overnight temperatures suggest a refreeze may only be superficial, especially at lower elevations. Localized assessments of changing surface conditions are essential for understanding how the snow might behave today. Planning to be off of steeper slopes by midday is never a bad idea when dealing with this type of avalanche problem.
