Above-freezing temperatures over the last 48 hours will make wet snow avalanches possible on steep terrain.  Monitor snow surfaces, and choose lower-angle slopes when you encounter wet, unsupportable, and slushy snow.  Avalanches could entrain large amounts of snow on steep slopes, particularly in confined features like gullies.

    Wet snow avalanches will be possible on steep slopes today as we enter the second day without an overnight freeze. Water has been observed through much of the snowpack, making avalanches more likely. Northerly aspects that have not had a significant shed cycle yet remain suspect with melting. Warm temperatures and rain showers below 8500 feet will continue to destabilize slopes, even with cloudy skies today. When you find wet snow or start sinking above your boots in slush, move to lower-angle slopes.

    Wet Slabs are unpredictable. While snow surfaces have cooled some overnight, water most likely continues to flow in the snowpack, making wet slab avalanches possible in very steep terrain. Lots of warming happened yesterday around rocks and cliffs on steep sunny slopes, increasing the amount of flowing meltwater. If your ski pole pushes through the surface into wet snow, consider moving to lower-angle slopes. Consider the consequences if the steep slope you’re riding avalanches, and watch for terrain traps where it doesn't take much wet and heavy snow to push you somewhere you don't want to be.

    Large cornice falls are possible with the recent warm temperatures. Avoid slopes below cornices and give them a wide margin on ridgelines where they can break further back than expected.

Avalanche Discussion

Spring is here. With two days of above-freezing temperatures, avalanches become more likely. Rain showers will contribute to the problem. It might be a good day to knock out some of those projects you’ve been putting off all ski season. Or maybe play some guitar while you watch the third round of The Masters. It looks like we will get a freeze tonight, producing some more supportable surfaces for tomorrow’s mission. If you do find yourself on skis, poke around and investigate how deep the saturated snow is below you and how far the meltwater has percolated. Remember that weird things can happen with a melting snowpack, and avalanches can be larger than expected.

Spring conditions and melting snow continue to make travel and access difficult at low elevations. 

Sara Boilen and Ian McCammon are developing an open-source tool to help individuals mitigate risk in avalanche terrain. The project's first stage involves interviewing backcountry enthusiasts who have been traveling in avalanche terrain for at least one season.
