Persistent slab avalanches remain unlikely but are not impossible at upper elevations on north and east aspects. A 1-3 feet slab sitting on top of weaker faceted snow at the ground can still be found in isolated areas. Today’s persistent slab avalanche problem is a low probability, high consequence scenario.
Although hard to find, signs of instability include cracking, collapsing, and recent avalanches. Find a safe location to dig down into the snowpack to look for loose, sugary snow near the ground underneath a denser slab. If you find unstable conditions on an aspect and elevation you plan to ski or ride, avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees.
