Generally safe avalanche conditions exist. A small amount of new snow, paired with strong winds, has created the potential for wind slabs on all north and east aspects above treeline. Identify and exercise caution around steep terrain displaying signs of wind effect, actively blowing snow, or dense, lens-shaped surfaces. Decrease your exposure by choosing non-wind-affected terrain or slopes less than 30 degrees.

    Over the last two of days, stormy weather has transitioned from warm to cold. An inch or two of new snow has fallen near treeline, accompanied by strong west-southwest winds. Leeward north and east aspects have been receiving transported snow since yesterday morning, creating the potential for both thin and thick slabs. Observe for shooting cracks and feel for dense, hollow-sounding surfaces as indicators of this problem. Above treeline holds the highest likelihood for triggering an avalanche, specifically beneath ridgelines and cliff bands, or on the sidewalls of chutes and gullies. Unsupported slopes among extreme terrain should be thoroughly evaluated and managed.

    Overnight and this morning, winds began to shift to the northwest and may have distributed snow onto southerly aspects above treeline. Confirm this by watching for blowing snow, wind affected surfaces, and newly formed drifts. Adjust your travel plans as needed.

Avalanche Discussion

Uncertainty exists regarding conditions above treeline on Mount Shasta. Recent weather has kept forecasters at lower elevations, and the amount of new snow and full impact of the wind are unknown. If traveling into the alpine, stay aware, and be prepared to self-evaluate snow conditions.

The wet-loose avalanche problem has been alleviated by freezing temperatures, causing surfaces to crust and harden. Yesterday, crusty surfaces ranging from 1 to 3 inches thick, were observed on all aspects near and below treeline. Be prepared for variable surface conditions at lower elevations. On southerly aspects, the sun may begin to soften the crust. In the unlikely event that you do encounter wet, penetrable snow, move off steep slopes and seek shadier terrain. Roller balls and pinwheels are pre-cursors to this problem.
