Heightened avalanche conditions exist on shaded slopes above 8,000 feet where it is possible to trigger a hard slab avalanche failing 2 to 4 feet deep. Signs of instability may not be present, so avoiding steep slopes that have buried weak layers is key. Carefully evaluate the terrain you choose to travel in and under, as even a small surface snow avalanche has the possibility of stepping down to buried weak layers.

    It is possible for the weight of a rider to trigger a hard slab avalanche that breaks 2 to 4 feet deep, failing on weak snow formed in January. While this weak layer is slowly becoming harder to trigger, poor snowpack structure exists and we are still relatively close to our last loading event. Slopes above 8,000 feet that face west through north through east are most suspect, especially on the west and southern sides of our forecast region where that January Drought Layer was more developed. 

    The snow from our most recent storm is still taking some time to settle and could produce a slab avalanche 1 to 2 feet deep on very steep, sheltered terrain. Take this into account and remember that a shallow avalanche could step down to the January Drought Layer.

    A very large skier triggered avalanche that occurred near Phillips Pass on 2/21/2026. The 5th rider on the slope triggered the smaller slab near the ridge that then triggered a much larger avalanche below the cliff band.

    Elevated winds over the last 24 hours have created fresh slabs up to 1 foot deep in very steep, upper elevations terrain. A fresh wind slab might not be large, but could take you off your feet and be dangerous in consequential terrain. You are most likely to trigger one of these slabs near ridgelines and rocky features above 9,000 feet.

    Wet Snow: Watch for warming on very steep south facing slopes that could produce small wet snow avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Surface hoar and weak faceted snow formed in January,  and was buried around February 8th. The first loading events put enough stress on the weak snow to start producing avalanches. The first avalanches reported were mostly failing on the buried surface hoar, which did not need much of a slab to produce human triggered avalanches. As more water weight has been added on top of the January Drought Layer, avalanches have started to fail on the surface hoar and facets. The slab has had enough time to set up and is now a hard slab (1 finger hard) that can produce large and destructive avalanches.

As time goes by, the snowpack begins to adjust, and we receive fewer signs of instability. Shooting cracks and collapsing may not be present. However, this doesn’t mean that a persistent slab avalanche can’t be triggered. If anything, it may catch people more off guard because there are no warning signs. The snowpack needs more time to stabilize before we can start venturing back onto steep shaded slopes, where this problem exists. Take a look at recent observations to see the sort of avalanches we are dealing with.
