Dangerous avalanche conditions will develop as new snow stacks up on Saturday night and Sunday above the snow line. Expect the most dangerous conditions in wind-loaded terrain, but consider any steep, open slope as suspect.  The most carefree riding will be on sheltered slopes that aren't above terrain traps and aren't steep enough to slide.

    Mt. Hood will be getting enough new snow that you should be suspicious of any steep, open, and unsupported slopes. As usual, expect these slabs to be larger and more reactive in wind-loaded terrain, where you could trigger a large avalanche that could bury or kill you. Most avalanches will likely fail on the recently buried 2/7 crust or within the new snow. As you move around, snowpack tests and small test slopes can help gauge the reactivity of the overlying slab.

    Use caution in steep terrain, especially in wind-loaded areas. Carefully move around and don't linger under steep open slopes, and be mindful that any triggered avalanche could be dire with the amount of early-season hazards that continue to plague the area.

    Small test slopes can provide useful information. Wind-ripped snow and shooting cracks like this are good reasons to avoid bigger terrain.

    Triggering wet loose avalanches involving the new snow will be possible near or below the snowline. Look for rollerballs, pinwheels, or sticky snow surfaces as clues indicating the upper snowpack is becoming wet and weak.  While most should be on the smaller side, they can still be consequential terrain with gullies, creeks, or other hazards in the runout.

Avalanche Discussion

A frontal system will keep precipitation focused on Mt. Hood, which will bring a significant spike in avalanche danger to Mt Hood and the southern Washington volcanoes. Snowfall will stack up across middle and upper elevations, and predominantly fall over a widespread crust that extends up to 8000 ft or so. This melt-freeze crust is robust on most aspects, with the exception of some wind-sheltered northerlies, where it may be thinner. We suspect most avalanche activity will occur on this crust or above within the new snow. If you find yourself on shaded aspects at mid- to upper elevations, consider digging down to see if avalanches could fail deeper on weak, faceted snow below a crust.
