Slabs 1 to 2 feet thick remain reactive to the weight of a person or snowmachine at upper elevations and on shaded, mid-elevation slopes. The slabs are sitting on collapsible layers of surface hoar and facets; new and drifted snow are gradually loading these layers and keeping the slabs stiff and reactive. That's demonstrated by a series of natural and remotely-triggered slides over the past week that have included at least one near-miss. The danger may not always annouce itself with shooting cracks and collapses. Staying off and out from under steep slopes is key to staying safe. Use an inclinometer to check before you commit to a slope. Use one even if you feel confident in your ability to eyeball things. The least risk is one slopes less than 30 degrees.
