Shallow wind slabs will be difficult to trigger but likely can be found on lee slopes at higher elevations.  Low doesn't equal no hazard.  In areas with low snow cover, use caution to avoid an early-season injury.

    In isolated areas, you may be able to trigger a small wind slab avalanche on Tuesday.  You're most likely to find wind-deposited snow up to 12" deep on E-NE aspects near and especially above treeline.   Steer around recently formed pillows and drifts and use caution before committing to open slopes at upper elevations steeper than 35 degrees.  As the sun comes out and temperatures warm, small rollerballs and pinwheels may release from steep sunny slopes in areas less wind affected.     

    (12/6/2020) Look for areas of stiffer wind drifted snow above the old snow surface, which is likely a crust in many areas.

Avalanche Discussion

Roughly 3" of snow arrived early Sunday morning along with a burst of westerly winds.  Ski patrol reported sensitive slabs in the AM 12+ inches deep on E-NE aspects near and above treeline and at least one public traveler reported triggering a small (D1) wind slab above treeline.  As conditions warmed Sunday and showers tapered off,  snow surfaces moistened.  After a fast start to winter in November, avalanche activity over the last week has been fairly quiet as we wait for more active and cooler weather to return. 

Surface conditions and snow depths vary greatly by elevation and position on the mountain.  At mid-elevations on the south side of Mt Hood, snow depths average around 40-50". Conversely the NE side remains shallow with 2-30" common near treeline.  In areas with low snow cover, early season conditions exist. It's a long season so use care to avoid stumps, rocks, open creeks, and other early-season hazards. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
