Persistent weak layers

Weak layers in the old snowpack represent the main danger.
Weak layers in the old snowpack represent the main danger.
Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released especially by large additional loads in particular on very steep shady slopes. Mostly the avalanches are small. The avalanche prone locations are rather rare. On rocky sunny slopes mostly small snow slides are possible as a consequence of solar radiation. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard crust.
The old snowpack is faceted and its surface has a crust that is strong in many cases. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. This applies in particular above approximately 1900 m. The wind slabs have bonded quite well with the old snowpack.
