    Wind slabs will form as forecasted new snow starts to be transported by moderate northwest winds. Snowfall is possible above 1800 metres in elevation as the unsettled weather continues. This wind slab will develop on mostly south aspects. Eastern aspects may also have wind-transported deposits. Triggering will be possible on higher-angled slopes. Sheltering terrain features such as gullies and rocky outcrops will act as catchments. These are the types of locations where loading tends to occur.

    Loose wet avalanche activity is possible as light rain continues over the next 24 hours. Rain below 2300 metres is possible, reducing surface structure. Rising freezing levels will result in light rain in the higher elevations at times, but sunny periods are also possible. Forecasted precipitation is not significant, and deep saturation is unlikely to occur. Triggering is possible at isolated steeper start zones that lack support.

Recent Avalanche Activity

No human or naturally triggered avalanches have been reported or observed over the past 24 hours.

Current Snowpack Conditions

In the southwest areas above 1900 metres in elevation, wind-driven deposits have formed. Strong winds transported any loose snow overnight. Over the past 24 hours, accumulated deposits of up to 30cm on the southeast aspects. Elevated temperatures and high-water content have contributed to the bonding process at the old-new snow interface and within the new snow. Rain has also affected the snowpack below 2300 metres. A crust has also formed at the lower elevations, breakable to skis. In the northwest a mix of rain and snowfall with 5 cm of new snow accumulated at 2000 metres elevation. This new snow has an even distribution with a high water content. A few days ago, snowfall accumulation was noted on Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro. The southwest areas of the region have isolated start zones above 1600 metres and have enough snow for avalanches to run. The northern areas have a higher threshold elevation.

Mountain Weather

The weather on the 15th of July will be partly cloudy with an isolated shower. The winds will be moderate north-westerly. The freezing level is about 2000 metres, rising to 2400 metres elevation over the next 24 hours. A broad trough moves across the North Island today and is followed by a disturbed northwest flow. A front moves onto the southwest of the South Island during the second half of the day, then over central New Zealand tomorrow.

Sliding Danger

Windward and exposed areas have been stripped by gale winds during the past storm cycle a few days ago. This has exposed an icy rime crust on slopes above 1400 metres. Plenty of hazards, such as exposed rocks and cliff bands, remain. It's essential to carry the appropriate gear, crampons, and an ice axe. A targeted skill set will reduce the chance of an accident.
