A variety of persistent weak layers exist on most slopes, generally buried 1-3 feet deep. Crusts+facet combinations, depth hoar, and surface hoar all produced avalanche activity in this zone during the last big storm, and the small storms over the past few days are not giving the snowpack time to completely "heal." Triggering large avalanches isn't likely, but it remains possible if you find the wrong spot on the wrong slope.
Some thoughts to reduce the chances of getting in trouble:
- Recent and previous wind loading: Slopes with stiff or hard layers somewhere above the weak layer are more suspect than slopes where you can easily get your arm, ski pole, or sled down to or near the ground.
- Aspect: Be aware of the direction the slope you are on faces. Last week’s avalanche activity was focused on slopes where the sun had formed crusts.
- Slope angle: Avalanches are most likely in "prime time" avalanche terrain, slopes around 35-45 degrees in steepness. However, remember that persistent slab avalanches can be triggered remotely: from gentler terrain below or to the sides of steeper slopes.
Additional Discussion:You may find some fresh wind drifts and slabs in alpine or upper elevation terrain, especially in the Soldier Mtns where winds blew harder than in the rest of this zone. These slabs could be sensitive where they formed above firm crusts or polished wind surfaces. Also, unobstructed sunlight could produce small, natural loose snow avalanches (sluffs) on sheltered, SE-S-SW-W facing slopes while they directly face the sun. The relatively small wind slab and loose snow avalanches won't pose much of a hazard on their own, but they could trigger the larger persistent slab avalanches discussed above as they cascade down slopes. Pay attention to what's above you as you play in the hills today.
