Fresh and older wind slabs represent the main danger. Also shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable.

The clearly visible wind slabs can still be released and above the tree line. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise. At high altitude and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust. Especially at intermediate altitudes and on steep slopes mostly small natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs of recent weeks are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Low and intermediate altitudes, sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust.
