Avalanche Activity

SC 28.02 New windslab developing above 950 metres on N through E to SE aspects. Avalanche hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The majority of the snowpack will start to thaw with surface instabilities possible on any very steep slopes overnight. New shallow localised accumulations of windslab will form in wind sheltered locations on North through East to South-East aspects above 950 metres. This will mostly occur in the Northern boundary of this forecast area with the hills South of the Dee receiving lesser amounts of new snow. Cornice stability will remain suspect throughout. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will rise to around the higher summits by dawn before dropping to 800 metres or so by the end of the afternoon. Overnight will see a mix of snow and rain but the day will be largely dry, particularly for hills South of the Dee. Winds, Southerly gale force overnight, veering and easing slightly to the West-South-West by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A bright day with the temperature around -1 degree Celsius at 930 metres. Winds were fresh to strong, mainly Southerly. ObservedSnowStability: Surface layers of the snowpack have frozen leaving the majority of the snowpack generally well bonded. North through East to South aspects still hold good coverage above 600 metres with cornices still in place above these aspects. Westerly aspects have least snow due to the recent thaw. The avalanche hazard is Low.
