Avalanche Activity

GL27/1 New snow and rain S winds unstable windslab gullies+ NW-N-E aspects 900m+ weak cornices in similar areas hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will continue to thaw at lower levels. Wet snow instabilities will exist on the steepest slopes and gullies as rain affects these areas. New snow and wind transport of existing deposits will form unstable windslab in wind sheltered areas mainly above 900 metres. Greatest accumulations will be in summit gullies and on North-West through North to Easterly aspects. Fragile cornices will exist above some of these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong Southerly winds will continue to affect the area. New snow in the early morning above 700 or 800 metres will potentially be heavy at times. Rain will affect lower slopes during this period. The freezing level will be around 1000 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Conditions have been milder with strong Southerly winds and light precipitation falling as sleet or wet snow at the highest levels. The freezing level is around 1100 to 1200 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The slow gradual thaw is improving general stability at lower levels where the snowpack has become soft and moist. Moderate to weakly bonded accumulations of snow exist in sheltered gullies and on steep North through East to South-Easterly aspects mainly above 950 metres. Weak cornices exist above some of these locations. Falling ice was observed today. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
