Special Announcement

The 12th Annual Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop (USAW) will be held on Saturday, November 2

I'll be giving a presentation on last year's epic snow and avalanche season in the La Sal and Abajo Mountains entitled: MOAB - The Mother Of All Basal weak layers. Come see a recap of how a particularly persistent weak layer, and a snowfall of more than 200% of average, created a season of sketchy, hair-trigger avalanche conditions that resulted in a fatality, numerous natural cycles, and a historic avalanche event in mid March that wiped out mature aspen stands and 75-100-year old Douglas Firs in the process.

Snow and Weather

Autumn is in full swing and we haven't seen any snow yet. This is actually a good thing as snow this time of year generally creates a weak, basal layer of sugary, faceted snow that will plague us for the rest of the season. Enjoy the colors and beautiful fall weather while you can, winter will be here soon enough!
