Avalanche Activity

Medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. In addition the wind slabs should be taken into account.

Older wind slabs remain in some cases prone to triggering on extremely steep shady slopes above approximately 2600 m. They can be released by a single winter sport participant. Wind slabs are to be found especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally in the high Alpine regions. Avalanches can in some cases be triggered in the old snowpack reach medium size in particular on steep shady slopes. The high temperatures from the late morning will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in all aspects. These conditions will bring about a gradual weakening in deep layers of the snowpack as the day progresses. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. The avalanche activity will gradually increase. Backcountry tours should be concluded before midday.

Snowpack Structure

In some cases the wind slabs have bonded still only poorly. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. The high temperatures as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack especially at intermediate and high altitudes.

Tendency

The conditions in the morning are spring-like. Increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
