A Special Avalanche Advisory for much of Colorado. Heavy snow and strong winds dramatically changed avalanche conditions. You can easily trigger large, deadly avalanches throughout President’s Day weekend.

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. You can trigger a large and dangerous avalanche near and above treeline. The most dangerous slopes face west to north through east where winds drifted recent snow into stiff slabs 2 to 3 feet deep. Approach steep slopes carefully and give them a wide buffer, avalanches may break wider and deeper than expected. As the day warms on Sunday, watch for small, loose wet avalanches on sunny slopes, especially around cliffs and rock outcroppings
