Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a dangerous avalanche on steep, wind-drifted slopes. This wind-drifted snow might have the typical hard, hollow feel to it or it can be soft, recently drifted snow with a wave-like appearance. The most dangerous slopes are just below ridgelines, along the edges of a gully or couloir, and around rock outcrops at upper elevations. If you trigger an avalanche on a wind-drifted slope it might step down to deeper buried weak layers and become a much larger and more dangerous avalanche. To reduce your chances of getting caught in an avalanche, avoid steep, wind-drifted slopes or slopes with over a foot of new snow facing northwest through north to southeast.
