Lo esencial

The chance persists for skiers and riders to trigger recently developed wind slabs at the mid and upper elevations. If clear skies persist into mid day, these slides will become more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects. Take note of the wind's effect on the snowpack and move to shaded slopes if snow surfaces begin to change under the influence of the sun. At the lower elevations, the snowpack is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely.

In exposed terrain at the mid and upper elevations, wind slabs have formed over the past two days. These slabs appear to be bonding well to old snow surfaces. However, backcountry travelers venturing into very steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain might still be able to trigger these slabs to depths of 18 inches.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect snow showers overnight with three to six inches of new snow by Tuesday morning. An additional one to three inches could accumulate during the day. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the single digits before rising into the teens in the afternoon. Westerly ridgetop winds will veer to the northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour. The General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be MODERATE on Tuesday in the Tetons. Backcountry travelers could trigger pockets of recently developed wind slabs up to 18 inches deep in steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain. New snow will add depth and volume to these slides.Persistent slabs up to three feet in depth continue to pose a threat to skiers and riders in the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas. In the Togwotee Pass area, the General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be MODERATE. The General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE in the Greys River area where these slabs are more widespread and more likely to be triggered. New snowfall will add weight to the underlying weak layers.
