Avalanche Summary

You can easily trigger avalanches where you find more than about 8 inches of new, drifted snow. Look for and avoid steep, drifted slopes that face northwest through east to south. Any slide you trigger in the storm snow can easily step down to buried weak layers and grow larger. Cracking in the storm snow and audible collapses are signs of unstable snow and indications to avoid steep slopes.

Most recent slides on buried weak layers were on northeast, east, southeast, or south-facing slopes right below ridges. The recent snow might make old drifts on these slopes harder to see. Easiest to simply avoid slopes greater than about 30 degrees that face those directions. Look for sheltered slopes without old, hard slabs that are not connected to steep slopes above as a safer option.
