Avalanche Activity

The new snow and wind slabs represent the main danger.

The strong wind has transported the new snow significantly. In all aspects numerous natural avalanches are possible. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In addition the wind slabs at the base of rock walls are prone to triggering in many places. Avalanches can be released, even by a single winter sport participant. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of new snow and wind the wind slabs have increased in size additionally. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on an icy crust. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted.
