Avalanche Activity

CM for 25.12. Merry Xmas. Thaw Conditions with potential cornice collapse and rock fall. Avalanche Hazard Low.

Forecast Snow Stability: The remaining moist snow pack will be stable in most locations, and continue to be subject to a slow thaw. The greatest snow cover will be found on steep coire headwalls, and open slopes of a North-East through East to South aspect above 900 metres. At lower elevations the cover will consist of patches and vertical ribbons in hollows and stream lines. Any residual cornices will present a limited threat of collapse, and the risk of rock fall will persist. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The mild conditions will continue into Christmas Day, the freezing level fluctuating around 3000 metres. After some light rain overnight, a dry day is expected. Winds will be from the South-West, generally gale force with some storm force gusts. Observed Weather Influences: Mild conditions with temperatures of 5 degrees Celsius recorded at 950 metres. Rain showers were present all day, with greater intensity in the afternoon. The winds were generally from the West-South-West very strong to gale force at times.
