Snowpack

At intermediate altitudes, there is 20 to 30 cm of snow on the flat monitoring sites on the northern flank of the Alps, up to 50 cm in some localities, otherwise less. At high altitudes there is widespread snow of 40 to 60 cm, in the west up to 80 cm. Southern Upper Valais, the southern flank of the Alps (excluding the Gotthard region) and Grisons have the least snow with 10 to 30 cm. Snow depths are average to slightly below average only in Valais and on the Northern Alpine Ridge. Otherwise, they are appreciably below the average for the end of November.

Before the precipitation in the second half of November, there was a continuous old snowpack, especially above approximately 2800 m. This contains some weak layers of faceted crystals, especially on northern slopes. Avalanches can occasionally be released in the old snowpack close to the ground.

This week's layers of new snow and snowdrift have increasingly stabilised. They should still be assessed carefully, especially on very steep terrain at altitude.

Outlook until Tuesday, 3 December 2024

On Monday, clouds will gather from the west and precipitation will set in from the northwest in the afternoon, which will subside again on Tuesday. In the extreme west of Lower Valais and on the northern flank of the Alps, 10 to 25 cm of snow is expected to fall, otherwise less. The snowfall level will drop from 2000 m on Monday afternoon to around 1000 m during the night to Tuesday. In the south, it will be mostly sunny on both days. In the inneralpine regions it will still be partly sunny on Monday. The wind will freshen on Monday afternoon and blow moderately from the southwest during the night to Tuesday in the regions exposed to precipitation at high altitudes.

The avalanche danger will initially decrease further and then increase again slightly with the precipitation and wind from Monday evening, especially in the west and north.
