Snowpack

With sometimes moderate to strong southeasterly winds, the weekend saw mostly small, but nonetheless occasionally triggerable snowdrift accumulations develop especially in the western Lower Valais, on the western and central part of the northern flank of the Alps as well as on the central part of the main Alpine ridge. On the northern Alpine ridge, near-surface weak layers are sometimes still prone to triggering, especially on wind-protected shady slopes. Otherwise, the snowpack is mostly well consolidated in these regions.

In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, soft, faceted layers make the snowpack structure less favourable. However, on shady slopes the overlying layers are either soft or very hard due to the effect of the wind and are thus now only likely to propagate fractures in isolated cases. The last known triggering in a deep weak layer was more than a week ago.

Gliding avalanche activity is gradually increasing again with the mild weather.

In the northern Prealps, there was low stratus cloud in some regions into the afternoon, with an upper limit around 1700 m. Elsewhere it was mostly sunny, with low cumulus clouds on the southern flank of the Alps.

Outlook

On Tuesday and Wednesday it will be mostly sunny and mild in the mountains, with light winds. The zero-degree level will rise to around 2400 m by Tuesday.

The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease. Gliding avalanche activity will increase slightly.
