Lo esencial

Large, overhanging and, fragile cornices are primed for triggering with high freezing levels and sunny skies.

Stay well back from the edge of ridges, and slopes threatened by cornices.

Problemas de aludes

  • Cornices

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1.5–2.5

Cornices are large and overhanging and remain a concern while warm temperatures persist. Cornice growth may continue during forecasted extreme winds at upper elevations.

  • Loose Wet

    • Alta montaña
    • Límite del bosque
    • Bajo el límite del bosque
    Probabilidad
    Possible
    Tamaño
    1–1.5

Elevated freezing levels coupled with sun may break down a surface crust formed overnight keeping the wet loose problem on the table. Keep an eye out for moist surface snow and avoid steep slopes during intense solar radiation.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain due to variable freezing levels.

Snowpack Summary

Clear skies overnight has developed a surface crust over moist snow.

Above 1800 m recent snow is rapidly settling over a crust and facets. In open terrain windward features are scoured back to this crust, and is wind affected in lee features.

The mid/lower snowpack is generally well settled and strong.

Cornices are reported to be large and looming. Be mindful of them overhead or when travelling on ridge tops.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Pay attention to cornices and give them a wide berth when traveling on or below ridges.
  • A moist or wet snow surface, pinwheeling, and natural avalanches are all indicators of a weakening snowpack.
  • Be careful as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Rocks will heat up with daytime warming and may become trigger points for loose wet avalanches.
