LO for 17/01. Considerable hazard on NW to NE aspects above 900m. Fragile cornices also on these aspects.

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight, fresh windslab will be deposited onto, and add depth too, the existing moderately bonded windslab. This will mainly affect wind sheltered locations, gully tops and scarp slopes above 900 metres on North-West to North-East aspects. Unstable cornices will continue to form above these aspects. Wind scoured slopes will remain firm, stable, and become more icy. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight there will be snow showers above 700 metres. During the day these showers will be lighter, but above around 500 metres. Overnight freezing level around 750 metres lowering to 600 metres or so during the day. Strong overnight South-Easterly winds will moderate during the day, veering South-South-Westerly. Observed Weather Influences: There were occasional showers which fell as snow above around 750 metres during the day. The freezing level was around 900 metres. Winds were moderate, mainly West-South-Westerly.

ObservedSnowStability: Above 1000 metres, some weaknesses are present in the deposits of windslab mostly located in wind sheltered locations on North to East aspects. Fragile cornices exist on these aspects. Below this level the existing damp snowpack has generally consolidated in the milder conditions. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
