Avalanche Activity

Even in moderately steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. Backcountry touring calls for caution and restraint.

The early morning will see quite favourable avalanche conditions. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust. Even in moderately steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on shady slopes above the tree line. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches. This applies especially on sunny slopes, as well as at the base of rock walls. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for caution and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day, in particular on sunny slopes below approximately 2700 m. The high temperatures from midday will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. Over a wide area less snow than usual is lying. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
