Avalanche Activity

Backcountry touring and snowshoe hiking call for meticulous route selection.

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong wind, avalanche prone wind slabs formed. The new snow can be released by a single winter sport participant. These conditions brought about a weakening in deep layers of the snowpack in particular on steep north, northeast and east facing slopes. Avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers and reach large size in particular on steep shady slopes. The avalanche prone locations are quite prevalent and are difficult to recognise.

Snowpack Structure

New snow to low altitudes. Over a wide area 30 to 40 cm of snow has fallen. The new snow of Thursday is lying on soft layers. The soft wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in all aspects. Precarious weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
