Avalanche Activity

LO for 20/2. Poor stability overnight when avalanches will occur mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 900 metres. Cornices! High hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: There will be a period of very poor stability during the night when wet snow avalanches will occur. All steep slopes above around 700 metres with recent windslab will be affected, particularly North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Many cornices above these aspects will collapse. During the day stability will slowly improve as the temperature drops. Fresh windslab developing during the day is not expected to be significant. The avalanche hazard will be High.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Moderate Southerly winds become strong and veer West-South-Westerly during the night. Showers will fall as snow to low levels in the evening and afternoon, but will be heavy and fall as rain below around 1300 metres for a time overnight. The freezing level rises above the summits during the night and then drops to around 400 metres by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: It was a cold, dry and sunny day with light West-South-Westerly winds. The freezing level rose to be around 500 metres by midday. ObservedSnowStability: Poorly bonded windslab is present on many aspects with greatest accumulations on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Unstable cornices are present above these aspects. On other aspects the windslab is more localised. Avalanche debris from yesterday and today was noted on several North-East and Easterly aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
