Lo esencial

High winds and slick surfaces will be the biggest hazard again in steep terrain today.

Warm temps and wind will fan bake the region but unlikely to see significant hazard until tomorrow.

Avoid ridge tops and hunt out some creamy turns.

With cloudy skies and warm temps we will likely see some heat effect.

This is unlikely to generate a significant avalanche hazard. However, avoid steep and confined terrain if encountering sticky and/or unconsolidated snow.

Recent Avalanche Activity

No recent activity has been reported.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Little change to yesterday with the forecasted winds not eventuating. A generally consolidated snowpack within the region.

Variety of surface conditions exist - Melt Freeze Crust on sunny slopes except for low angle areas. On shady slopes the snow surface is effected by the recent wind but staying cold.

Some Surface Hoar has been observed in sheltered areas but is unlikely to survive the increasing winds and precipitation forecast tomorrow.

Mountain Weather

Some scattered rain in the west of the region. Severe Gale NW winds and warm temps. FAFL - 2300m

Sliding Danger

There is a slick layer in areas exposed to the wind and under thin layers of snow.

This will get worse today with the wind scouring. Ice axe and crampons are key for moving into steep/extreme terrain.

Expect to encounter it near ridge top and turn around early if so.

Forecast Confidence

High

  • The snowpack structure is well understood.
  • We are uncertain due to variable freezing levels.
