You can trigger an avalanche where you find deep areas of drifted snow. Given the wind direction, most of these drifts rest on layers of old weak snow buried a foot or two below the snow surface. Seek out safer options in wind-sheltered terrain, or on slopes less than 35 degrees, not connected to steeper terrain above. Consider you might trigger a steep slope from above, below, or from a distance.
