Lo esencial

Avalanches remain unlikely for Saturday.  If you are out riding on or beneath steep slopes, it is always worth considering avalanches.  Continue to carry avalanche rescue gear, and use thoughtful travel techniques like only exposing one rider at a time to those steep slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow conditions have remained pretty consistent during the last 2 weeks.  Sunny skies and previously warm temperatures mean that most sunny slopes are crusty.  Shadier slopes are still holding dry snow, although it is far from powder by now.  In the coldest spots, and particularly low in the terrain (where the cold has "pooled") we are finding very well-developed facets and surface hoar (see attached video).  Honestly these flat, shady, and undisturbed meadows and clearings hold the best riding.  It goes without saying (but I guess I'm saying it) that our snowpack is pretty darn thin (see pic).  The south facing slopes on the north side of the lakes are almost bare.
