The only way to stay safe is to stay off slopes steeper than 30 degrees and make sure you are not underneath steep slopes either.

    Well, today is the day. We've had snow all week, and now we have sunny skies and fresh powder. And a very unstable snowpack. It's a recipe for disaster. There is no way that you can trust any steep northerly facing slopes not to avalanche. Ask yourself, do you have the discipline to stay in low-angle conservative terrain today? Another thought; someone may not come home out of the mountains today.

Recent Activity

There was a snowmobile triggered avalanche on Thursday in Rolfson Canyon. It was triggered remotely from a distance while a rider was on flat terrain. This hill is notorious for avalanches. It seems that almost everyone who was out in the mountains on Thursday remotely triggered avalanches.

Snow and Weather

General Conditions: We picked up another 4 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. This brings the totals up to almost two feet since Monday in many areas. Wind has really dropped off and it's basically calm this morning. Temperatures dropped into the single digits overnight. Riding conditions should be decent. You will find many areas where you are punching through the new snow into the old weak facets. Your track will be digging deep trenches. Many south-facing slopes were bare before this storm. The bottoms of the canyons are still shallow making for difficult entry and exits.

Mountain Weather: It is going to be a gorgeous day up in the mountains. We'll see mostly sunny skies with temperatures into the low 20s. The wind will stay generally light from the southwest. We'll see a few clouds on Sunday and Monday with warmer temperatures. It looks like there is a chance for a small amount of snow on Wednesday.
