You could trigger an avalanche today above 3000 ft on steep east and south-facing slopes. Look for snow blowing at ridgelines, drifts deeper than your boot tops, and large, pillowy drifts as signs of the avalanche problem. Traveling on hard and textured old snow surfaces will reduce your exposure to unstable snow.

    What and where is it:Soft wind slabs have formed in east and south-facing terrain above 3000 ft from 4-5  inches of snow over the past three days. How can you recognize it: Wind slabs will often look smooth and pillowy. Probe with a ski pole to assess thickness, and take a close look at the slab/underlying snow structure to judge sensitivity. In some areas the slabs could be very soft and give little warning, yet still have the ability to propagate wider than expected.How can you manage it: Use caution around areas of smoother, drifted snow. Dig down to the hard snow below to better understand how easily the new snow slides on top of the old surface with hand shears or column tests. To reduce your exposure to new slabs, travel on hard and wind-textured old snow surfaces.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday’s weather continued to build a variable wind-affected snow surface. Snow showers persisted with moderate northwest winds and poor visibility in freezing fog. The Mount Washington area has received 4–5 inches of new snow over the past three days, while westerly winds averaging 36 mph have provided steady transport into east-facing ravines.

Observers yesterday found a patchwork of surfaces ranging from scoured old snow to deep drifts. Drifted snow thickness varied dramatically over short distances, with some pockets over two feet deep. Higher in start zones on south aspects in Tuckerman Ravine, propagating soft slabs were found to be reactive and actively loading.

Conditions remain MODERATE today. Human-triggered avalanches are possible in wind-loaded start zones, especially in steep, lee terrain.
