Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will thaw with isolated wet snow instabilities possible only on very steep terrain. Otherwise the moist soft snow will remain generally well bonded. Greatest amounts of snow will be mainly on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Any remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A poor day is forecast. The freezing level will rise well above the summits with rain throughout the day. Storm force winds expected, generally South-Westerly. Observed Weather Influences: Early morning rain at lower levels turning to snow above 700 metres. No discernible wind around 1150 metres noted. The freezing level started to rise and cloud lifted early afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is generally well bonded. A blanket of new snow over all aspects above 700 metres is rapidly thawing with cover noticeably diminishing by early afternoon. Older snow has become much firmer. Greatest amounts of snow are found in West through North to East facing corries above 900 metres. Stability of any remaining cornices is poor. The avalanche hazard is Low.
