The General Avalanche Hazard is LOW at all elevations this morning and will rise to MODERATE as increasing temperatures and sunlight soften the snow surface. If skies clear the hazard could rise to CONSIDERABLE in the afternoon. Once the snow surface softens significantly the potential for wet loose and wet slab avalanches to occur on steep snow covered slopes will increase. Lingering layers of buried facted snow have potential to become failure planes. These weak layers persist at a variety of depths in some areas and are not a significant threat in many other areas.
Avalanche Discussion
Skies will continue to clear and temperatures are forecast to drop into the twenties overnight. Expect partly cloudy skies on Saturday with temperatures rising into the forties in the mountains and into the fifties in the valleys. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in the early morning, increase to MODERATE as temperatures warm and snow surfaces soften and further increase to CONSIDERABLE in the afternoon. The potential for wet loose and wet slab avalanches to occur on steep snow covered slopes will increase through the day.
