Westerly winds have and continue to drift snow and form dangerous slabs on east-facing slopes. You can trigger avalanches large enough to bury you on slopes with wind-drifted snow. Avalanches will be larger, and you could trigger them from a distance on northerly-facings slopes that had snow cover before this storm.
Steer clear of steep, wind-loaded slopes near the ridgetops. Shooting cracks or a change from softer to much harder snow indicate you have found a wind-drifted slab.
