Avalanche Summary

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Rocky Mountain National Park, Indian Peaks Wilderness, and James Peak Wilderness. New snow and strong winds will create very dangerous avalanche conditions starting Saturday night and lasting through Sunday. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended during this time.

Saturday, you can trigger an avalanche where you find firm wind-drifted snow. Plenty of snow is available for transport, so look for rounded pillows on north through east to south-facing aspects. If the snow cracks under your weight, head to wind-sheltered terrain or lower-angle slopes. It is getting less likely you will trigger a deeper avalanche. You can reduce the chance of this further by checking you are traveling on slopes with a consistently deep snowpack close to 2 meters.
