At upper elevations backcountry travelers could trigger slabs to two feet in depth on steep slopes particularly above or below cliff bands or cornices. Larger triggers such as snow machines or more than one person on a slope may be necessary to initiate slides. In isolated, very steep areas with deep drifted snow, slabs to six feet in depth could be human triggered. At mid elevations pockets of surface slab to two feet in depth could be triggered in steep, wind loaded starting zones. Avalanches are unlikely at low elevations except in isolated pockets.
Avalanche Discussion
The northwest flow will be mostly dry Wednesday with some light snow, with little accumulation. Temperatures at 9,500 feet are expected to be in the low teens Wednesday morning then warm to the upper 20s. Winds will be north to northwesterly at 15 to 20 miles per hour. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate throughout the region. Slabs to two feet in depth continue to be a concern on steep areas near cliff bands or under cornices. Deeper slabs lurk in very steep areas with good wind deposition. No slides have been reported since Sunday and the snowpack is settling and becoming more stable. Larger triggers are likely to be required to trigger slides. Periods of sunshine will increase the sensitivity of slides and produce sloughs off steep slopes or rocky areas.
