Lo esencial

Pockets of soft slab one to two feet in depth exist at the mid and upper elevations. For the second day in a row skiers have had close calls in Granite Canyon. On Wednesday and Thursday skiers triggered slabs in the area between Mile Long and Air Force Couloirs that have caught and carried victims. One skier was reported to have sustained a knee injury. Similar events are possible today in steep wind loaded starting zones and cliff areas. At the lower elevations a weak layer of buried surface hoar is a source of snowpack instability. With todays warm temperatures some potential exist to trigger pockets of slab in very steep wind loaded avalanche prone terrain at the lower elevations.
