Human triggered avalanches are possible on weak layers buried by soft slabs 1-2 feet deep. Steep slopes above 35° should warrant careful assessment of the snowpack and terrain as avalanches have been triggered across a variety of different terrain types on north through east aspects. Warning signs of instability such as cracking or collapsing may not be present before encountering unstable snow.

    Weak layers formed 7 days ago are buried by soft slabs 1-2 feet deep. Over the last several days numerous D1-2 human triggered avalanches have been reported primarily on N-NE-E-SE aspects above 7500’. Avalanches have occurred on a variety of terrain types including wind loaded and sheltered areas. Very steep, unsupported, and convex slopes are the most likely place to trigger an avalanche. Slight changes in aspect, elevation, or terrain type can affect the reactivity of the weak layer. Practice safe travel protocols such as riding one at a time and planning your route to identify areas of increased exposure to avalanches.

Persistence

Small persistent grains of near surface facets have been buried by 24-28 inches of snow (2.5-3.2 inches of SWE) since February 6th. Although the distribution of this weak layer is fairly widespread, avalanche activity and stability test results have been less uniform and variable. Avalanche activity, with slab depths around a foot deep, has been fairly continuous since the weak layer was buried. Yesterday was the first day without any reported avalanches. Continue to keep this avalanche problem on the forefront of your mind today into the coming days as we enter a more active weather pattern. Snowfall begins this afternoon pushing the frigid cold air away. The Feb 6th weak layer of concern will be worth tracking with the arrival of new snow, especially since the persistent grains lie above a continuous bed surface of crusts up to around 8500-9000'. More snow will change the characteristics of the overlying slab, so we will wait to see how the weak layer adjusts to the stress of loading. Larger avalanches will be possible with the addition of new snow problems. Keep an eye on those current snow surfaces today, weak layers can develop over a short period with the right weather conditions. 

Deeper weak layers buried January 31st by hard slabs 2-3 feet below the surface have trended unreactive. Large loading events during February have tested the weak layer without much avalanche activity observed. Be weary of isolated areas such as thin, rocky, and complex terrain where these weak layers could be easier to trigger. We will continue to monitor the snowpack as new snow adds stress to the whole snowpack.
