Lo esencial

Avalanche activity is unlikely on Sunday in the Newberry zone. Continue to use safe travel techniques and look out for key changes in the snowpack as you move through different elevations and aspects.

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday in the NW chutes area off Paulina Peak, I found significant scouring from recent NW winds and a predominant surface crust. On more leeward aspects (E and SE), I did see up to 5 inches of new unconsolidated snow, which the cold temps preserved nicely. Be aware of variable conditions before opting to enter consequential terrain, and look out for surface hoar growth over the coming days as cold, clear weather carries on into the week. If this weaker surface snow (SH) gets burried, it could lead to future problems for the stability of the snowpack.

Don't put your blinders on just because the danger is forecast to be Low. It is always a good idea to identify terrain traps like cliffs or gullies that can make even a small avalanche have bigger consequences.
