Avalanche danger is MODERATE at all elevations. Another night of no freezing temperatures leaves the possibility that the snow surface will warm quickly today and be susceptible to human triggered Wet Loose avalanches.

    There were no reports or observations of Wet Loose avalanches, or signs of instability yesterday. However, poor overnight temperature recovery, and a forecast for continued well above average temperatures is too much of a red-flag to let our guard down. The likelihood for human triggered Wet Loose avalanches on specific terrain features remains possible. Cloud cover may limit some of the influence of the strong spring sun today, but that will be the only limiting factor contributing to further weakening of the surface snow. Pay close attention to increasing ski, board and boot penetration as an indication of weak surface snow. Other important warning signs of warming conditions and potentially unstable snow are rollerballs or pinwheels originating from turns, or occurring naturally.

Avalanche Discussion

We have experienced another 24-hour period without freezing temperatures at most remote weather stations at all elevations. Low temperatures at most sites were yesterday at the time of this writing. Some locations are several degrees warmer this morning. Cloud cover will be the only limiting factor to the possibility of Wet Loose avalanches today, so pair this observation with careful attention to how soft and unsupportive the surface snow is wherever you travel today. East facing slopes will warm first, followed by South and West facing slopes later in the day. In general, steeper terrain will heat up faster with a more direct sun angle.

Choose terrain carefully for safe travel in an obstacle ridden landscape. Involvement in even a small Wet Loose avalanche that takes you off of your feet could have high consequences when exposed to terrain traps, or in steep alpine terrain. Please be considerate of other travelers in the mountains today. Avoid traveling beneath other parties in steep terrain where you could be exposed to avalanches they could trigger, or where your presence may delay their descent out of consideration for your safety and put them outside of their timing window.

Continue to “bring the metal” for travel in steep terrain, where you will need ski and boot crampons for safe travel on firm surfaces, and a self-arrest tool like an ice-axe or whippet in case of a slip or fall. Rockfall should also remain front of mind, particularly in confined terrain in the alpine.
