With direct sun and skyrocketing temperatures, the avalanche danger for wet avalanches will rise to MODERATE today on all aspects and elevations today. Cornices and roof slides are also serious objective hazards in the mountains today.

The snowpack is generally stable this morning and natural and human-triggered avalanches are unlikely. This is about to change.

WET AVALANCHES: With clear skies and forecast scalding temperatures, however, wet avalanches will be increasingly possible today on all aspects and elevations. For wet loose avalanches, the mystery is no mystery: if you see point release sluffs, pinwheels and rollerballs, and you're sinking and gouging into the snow, it's time to head to the car. Isolated wet slab avalanches may also be possible in areas that have had a poor refreeze over the last several days.

CORNICES: These monsters will continue to calve off naturally, sometimes triggering avalanches below. Avoid being on or below these huge cornices.

ROOF AVALANCHES remain a significant objective hazard with skyrocketing temps. A roof fatality occurred as recently as April 2023 in the Brighton township.

Recent Activity

Shallow wet push-alanches and natural cornice fall were reported in the Ogden mountains over the last couple of days. I anticipate more of this today and tomorrow.

Snow and Weather

Skies are clear with overnight "lows" in the low to mid-40s. Winds are light from the northwest.

Supportable corn can be expected sequentially on east, then south, then west facing aspects this morning. Play your aspects and head home when the snow becomes unsupportable. Coverage remains good with 60-90" of snow still in the higher elevations.

For today, we'll have sunny skies, light backing winds, and temps skyrocketing to near 50°F up high and hte mid-60s down low! Warmer tomorrow before cooler temps arrive this weekend.
