Lo esencial

Winds will continue to build dangerous slabs, especially on leeward slopes, gullies, and cross-loaded terrain features. If triggered, these avalanches have the potential to “step down” to weak layers near the ground, creating a large avalanche. Avoid wind loaded starting zones on steep slopes. Watch for cracking and be aware of hollow sounding snow--both obvious signs of instability.

    Southwest winds are forecast to continue throughout the day.  Wind speed is forecast to be optimal for transport and plenty of snow is available. Yesterday's winds varied depending on timing and location on the mountain (NW-W-SW). Avoid areas with a cohesive slab, especially if cracking or shearing is observed.

    Faceted snow at the bottom of the snowpack remains the more significant hazard on slopes near and above treeline and all aspects.  This is a challenging problem to negotiate as it presents a low probability but high consequence scenario.  These weak layers will likely be triggered in a shallow area near rocks or cliffs often with no warning. Steeper slopes at high elevations present the most significant probability of being triggered.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow pits and results from column tests continue to show a high level of spatial variability. Snowpack structure still remains poor, with weak basal facets across most of the upper mountain near and above treeline. Energy is also present on many of these aspects with ECTP being reported on multiple aspects and elevation bands. Some tests are failing on the basal facets and others are failing on crusts with near-surface facets above or below. Strength is moderate with some areas reporting CT11 and others CT25. 

As folks venture out to locations further afield, continue to evaluate snowpack conditions carefully. ECT tests are a great way to check slope stability with persistent slab probelm.

The last storm added 4-12” of snow to the moutnian with more falling at high elevations. Winds have been mostly out of the west, with some NW and SW.

Thus far, no avalanches have been observed or reported this season.  This will likely change within the next week, significant snow is forecast for the next ten days.   Egress and regress remain challenging, but in some places, they are achievable without significant hazards.  Be wary of seemingly snow covered slopes; many of these areas had significant rock before this storm.
