Lo esencial

It will be possible to trigger an avalanche on North and East slopes at treeline and in the alpine.  There is a lot of soft snow that could be moved by locally Moderate winds, and create wind slabs on these lee slopes.  Blowing snow is evidence of growing wind slabs; variations in the depth of new snow and variations in snow textures on opposing aspects are indications of previous wind loading.  Evaluate the wind slab problem on small slopes or slopes less than 30 degrees.

    Recent winds have been a bit lighter than we are used to here in Central OR and we've seen less Wind Slab avalanches than would be typical with the continued new snow.  Nonetheless Wind Slab avalanches remain possible on specific terrain features.  They are most likely down wind from terrain that sees higher wind and thus more moving snow.  In my mind this means: on alpine slopes, on features that funnel winds like mountain passes, and also on lone features that extend significantly above adjacent terrain (most of our peaks).  Keep your gaurd up and if you are stepping out onto bigger or more consequential slopes continue to evaluate each individual slope that you choose to ride.

Avalanche Discussion

We have seen continued snowfall throughout the OR Cascades.  Lighter 24 hr totals and Light to Moderate winds have provided some amazing riding conditions.  As we continue to get new snow, and see Light to locally Moderate wind speeds, it is prudent to continue assessing the Wind Slab problem.  There is a lot of light snow out there available for transport.
