Small human triggered avalanches will be possible on Sunday. Wind drifted snow on all aspects near and above treeline will be the main concern. These avalanches will be on the smaller side. However, be cautious of terrain that can make the outcome of a small avalanche worse.

    On Sunday small wind slabs will be possible near and above treeline primarily in isolated or extreme terrain .  We are forecasted to get a few inches of new snow that will fall in the afternoon. We will also have winds shifting directions and coming from the east. This will build small wind slabs on westerly aspects in addition to already existing small wind slabs on easterly aspects. This is different from our usual wind slab location, as we often see westerly winds. 

    Your best bet is to assess the snow depth and look for small drifts of snow below ridgelines and on features that collect snow. Other clues to be on the lookout for are textured snow surface, pillow-like features, and cracking. I often use small/safe test slopes to check for instability. Although these wind slabs will be on the smaller side, remember a small avalanche can still hurt a human, especially if there are terrain traps present (i.e. cliff, trees, extreme terrain).

Avalanche Discussion

On Saturday I toured out near Broken Top. The snow surface was a mix of firm ice and pockets of new snow a few inches deep. I found a few very small wind slabs on easterly slopes up to 8" deep. The day started off partly sunny, and cloud coverage increased in the afternoon. Around 2pm the visibility was limited in the alpine, and it was lightly snowing.  While touring, I measured 2cm of new snow around 8,000ft and a trace of new snow around 6,500ft. Some of the snow that fell was graupel. This snow grain can sometimes act as a non-persistent weak layer if buried. I dont believe this fell everywhere in our forecast zone. 

While touring I also hiked up to one of the large avalanches that occured a week ago during the rain event. This was located on an east slope at 8,000ft on Broken Top. The crown was over 12' tall, and the majority of the easterly face appeared to have slid. Again, this is an old avalanche problem that is no longer with us.
