Triggering an avalanche remains possible today in a variety of areas. Above the rain/snow line, avalanche hazard is focused near ridgetops, in gullies, and on open slopes where wind-drifted snow has deposited. Below the rain/snow line, wet snow avalanches remain possible in steep areas on any aspect.

    Strong winds in excess of 100 mph and snowfall have occurred over the past 24 hours. Rising snow levels have deposited increasingly denser snow on top of less dense snow. This has created a slab over weak layer that is most pronounced in areas where wind drifted snow has deposited. This avalanche problem exists mainly above treeline and near treeline, but may extend below treeline in isolated areas due to the strength of the winds.

    There are many clues you can use to help identify the most likely locations where wind-drifted snow has deposited into potentially unstable slabs. Clues such as blowing snow, cornices above a slope, tiny ripples in the snow surface, and scoured areas on the upwind side of a ridge all paint a picture of where to find the specific slopes of concern. Recent slab avalanche activity and cracking in wind-blown snow represent clear signs that the wind slab problem is present.

    Once you identify where wind slabs may exist, you can move carefully around these areas. Expect to encounter the greatest hazard near ridgetops, in gullies, and on open slopes where wind-drifted snow has deposited.

    Rain on new snow is expected to have triggered some wet loose avalanches last night while snow levels were rising. It remains possible that backcountry travelers could trigger some additional wet loose avalanches today in steep areas where rain on snow has occurred.

    Recent wet loose avalanches, roller balls, and pinwheels are all indications that point to the presence of this avalanche problem. Move cautiously around steep slopes in areas where these signs of wet snow instability exist.

Avalanche Discussion

In isolated areas, it's not impossible to encounter a storm slab avalanche problem today due to upside-down new snow layering. It would take the specific alignment of several factors: slopes that are above the approximately 8,000' rain/snow line, wind protected, and that received the upper end of new snowfall of around 8 to 10 inches. Snow surface cracking in wind protected areas is an indication of the presence of storm slab instability.

The Dec 12 persistent weak layer and basal facets linger in the forecast region's southern and eastern portions.  Locations above 8,000-8,500 ft with a shallower and weaker snowpack are the areas of concern. Some snowpit tests continue to produce unstable results in isolated areas, but most data indicates that these weak layers have gained enough strength to support the snowpack. We received a substantial amount of new rain and snow load last night, but it was less in the eastern and southern portions of the forecast area, making it easier for lingering weak layers to handle the load. That said, if you happen to trigger an isolated snowpack collapse or whumpf sound today, it's best to avoid NW-N-NE aspect avalanche terrain in the immediate area.
